How It Works
We partner with hard-working, local families to help them build a better life for themselves and their loved ones – because we know that decent, affordable shelter offers strength, stability, and self-reliance. Each year, Niagara Area Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates homes in Niagara County which are then sold to families seeking affordable housing through an affordable, low-interest mortgage.
Families in need of decent affordable housing who are making less than 80% of the Area Median Income can apply for a Habitat home by completing an application. Our Family Selection Committee reviews each applicant and selects homeowners based on three criteria:
- The applicant’s level of need
- Their willingness to partner with Habitat
- Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan
Sweat Equity
Habitat’s homebuyers invest 500 hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners, in addition to paying an affordable mortgage and receiving financial education.
Eligibility
To qualify, families must make at least $27,000 per year and cannot exceed these income limits for their household size.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
